The older I get the more I can relate to the Sanderson sisters, on like, a spiritual level. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to start kidnapping children to steal their souls, but that youthful glow is what my dreams are made of these days. Ugh, that elasticity I totally took for granted, another way youth is wasted on the young. THANK GOODNESS I have so many more good years left in this skin and anti-aging really starts with prevention. There is a lot we can do to protect ourselves, sunscreen is the number 1 on that prevention list, so wear sunscreen ALWAYS, although that is a topic for another post. Number 2, COLLAGEN, COLLAGEN, COLLAGEN.
I love when someone DMs me asking the benefits of collagen. I will literally drop everything to boast my love of collagen. Collagen is SO GOOD FOR EVERYTHING. Your hair, skin, nails, metabolism, energy, digestion, bones, muscles, connective tissue. It improves liver health, protects your HEART, repairs leaky gut. I mean… I hope you’re asking yourself by now why you aren’t taking collagen. But don’t take my word for it. Here are some articles by highly trained professionals that further support my statements.
Dr. Axe always sums it up best, short and sweet.
Lauryn Evarts is a collagen goddess.
How MUCH collagen?
AT LEAST 20g/day. One article I found suggested no more than 25g daily. Another said it was based on age. I just did a quick google search to see if it’s possible to take too much collagen. Surveys seems to have mixed answers- too much is possible, but I can’t seem to find any stats on how many grams is actually too much. I’d say a safe number to aim for is in the 20-25g range. I just did the math real fast and realized I consume about 26g’s a day. I think I’m perfectly okay with that number. Borderline extreme, just like me.
HOW should you take collagen?
Eat it. Drink it. Bathe in it. Just kidding you can’t bathe in it, turns out collagen proteins CANNOT be easily absorbed through the skin, only bathing in the blood of small children can restore your youth externally. (That being said- all those night creams that boast collagen as their main ingredient… toss em.)The best way is via a collagen supplement. I take both the tablets and will add the powder form to my coffee in the morning. Here is a really great article about the kinds of collagen to look for and how to find the right brand for you. This is the brand I take.
As far as powders go, Vital Proteins is queen. Both their collagen and marine peptides are amazing. However, can be pricey. Great Lakes is another brand I really dig.
Mmmmk. I think I covered all the bases of my collagen basics. Does this help? Did I miss anything? Do you want more? Let me know.
Happy anti-aging my friends!
I take collagen too, I’ve noticed it’s really helping my cellulite.
